The Professional Puppeteer’s Diploma was established in 1991. Students train specifically to become freelance artists in the discipline of puppetry; in individual skills development, and in collaborative performance at various performance events. Movement studies form a core element to all puppetry work. There are supporting studies in voice, and options in puppetry in education and therapy. Operating technique classes take up a third of the coursework.
The Diploma is taken over two years, but a fast track option is sometimes available depending on ability. Diploma students work six compulsory modules on a roll-on roll off programme over 24 months which includes 41 weeks of study, up to 24 weeks of work placement plus 7 weeks to complete the portfolio.Training is located principally in North Yorkshire, where the small student group work and live and study together, enjoying the chance to study intensively, almost free accommodation (although conditions apply), and use of workshop space. Special tuition and performance projects take place in London. This Course is very intensive.
